Police have launched an investigation into a robbery which reportedly occurred about 14: 00 hours in the vicinity of German’s Restaurant, New Market Street, Georgetown yesterday.
According to reports, an armed bandit and his accomplice snatched a bag containing $4.5 million from businesswoman, Leila Goberdhan, shortly after she exited the German restaurant. The woman’s step daughter, Treasure James, said that she received a call moments after the incident occurred.
James said that her stepmom who operates a business in the North West Region had conducted business at a city bank earlier in the day before heading to the restaurant. James believes that the bandits might have followed her stepmother from the bank.
“People usually get followed from the bank so I think she might have been followed because they were out there waiting on her. The driver saw them first but he thought that it was people from the area,” James explained.
She said that her stepmother had just finished having lunch with her father and their driver at the restaurant when she was attacked.
“My father and stepmom were with their driver…They finished eating and the driver went to the car, daddy went to the washroom and my stepmom stepped out to go into the car. As she was walking to the car a guy came up to her. She said it was two of them; one grabbed her hand bag but she held on to it. The driver saw what was happening and he picked up a piece of wood but the other guy pulled out a gun,” James said. The bag contained the cash, passports and other documents, she added.
The bandits reportedly fled the scene on a motorcycle. The businesswoman is said to have lodged a report at the Brickdam Police Station immediately after the incident occurred. Police investigations into the matter are continuing.
