Dear Editor,
I refer to the pertinent points raised by Ralph Seeram in his “From the Diaspora” column (KN, Feb 1, 2015) examining the issues surrounding the promotion of the infamous Leonora “torture cops”.
It is difficult to assign degrees of importance to the many pressing concerns highlighted by Mr Seeram but two of his observations that struck a personal chord were, “If that then 15-year-old, yes he was only 15-years-old, was the son of President Donald Ramotar, or the son of any Cabinet Member, son of Dr Roger Luncheon, son of PSC Chairman Omesh Persaud, son of Commissioner of Police Ag. Seelall Persaud or the son of any of the PPP big wigs, do you think these two inhuman beings for policemen would have still been in the force, much less to receive promotion?” and “The tortured teenager came from a poor family from the countryside, got no connections, so no one cared…”.
I consider another disturbing report carried in the same edition of KN captioned “Girl, 15, accuses prominent official’s son of rape”.
This article describes the recidivism displayed by an alleged serial rapist and woman-abuser whose father is a “political candidate” and is presumably another well-connected “big wig”.
The article relates the absurdity that while being in the company of his father the teen’s alleged assailant was briefly detained, but it is unclear whether he will be charged.
I transpose Mr Seeram’s curiosity here and ponder what if it was the daughter of President Ramotar, or Ministers Priya Manickchand, or Frank Anthony in the shoes of this hapless child?
Would the Guyana Police Force (or is it Service these days?) be as lenient with a perpetrator accused by one of these Government officials? Editor, I have seen time and time again evidence to suggest that different standard operating procedures are employed for the privileged versus the ordinary in our society.
In the meantime our poor 15-year-old children are being battered by State institutions, their officials and their untouchable family members.
