Attorney-at-Law Sase Gunraj is the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM)’s newest Commissioner. He was officially sworn in yesterday at the Office of the President by Head of State Donald Ramotar.
Gunraj will represent the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) at GECOM.
President Ramotar, in brief remarks, told the media that Gunraj was appointed as a result of the resignation of former appointee Dr. Keshav ‘Bud’ Mangal who bowed out due to ill-health.
“It is important that this vacancy be filled quickly because of the fact that we are going towards an election. This job has now been completed.”
Ramotar expressed confidence that Gunraj will make a valuable contribution to GECOM and wished him well.
While Gunraj acknowledged that he was joining the Commission at a crucial time, particularly since elections day is fast approaching, he was assertive in stating that “I am prepared to, proverbially, hit the ground running, and make my contribution in the best way possible to the holding of successful elections in May and thereafter, as the need arises at the commission”.
After his remarks, Gunraj was advised by GECOM’s Chairman, Dr. Steve Surujbally that he must always strive to uphold the oath he took in becoming a commissioner. Gunraj gave assurances that he would do his best.
