A 44-year-old father of two, who tried to con two unsuspecting women last year, was yesterday sentenced to two years in jail after appearing before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, on two separate charges of fraud.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Grant, explained to the court that Paul Gittens, on January, 20, 2014, at Alberttown, Georgetown, obtained from Thandeka Watson a sum totaling $100,000 to purchase a flat screen television on her behalf.
He said that a few days later, on January 28, Gittens collected $800,000 from another unsuspecting woman, Harriet Hackett, pretending that he was in a position to purchase a motorcar for her. Neither of the women received what they paid for.
Though he pleaded guilty to both charges, he told Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry that it was just a business transaction gone wrong, and that things did not turn out the way he had planned.
“Your worship please, all I beggin’ yuh fuh, is fuh show some leniency,” he said repeatedly.
The Chief Magistrate, however, sentenced him to one year for each of the offences.
