When the action in the Mayor’s Cup Football tourney continues at the Georgetown Football Club ground this evening, fans could expect competitive duels when the Guyana Police Force opposes Haslington Sparta United (HSU) in the main supporting encounter to the Georgetown Football Club against Uitvlugt.
This much was intimated to Kaieteur Sport by coordinator of activities, Lennox Arthur when we spoke with him yesterday afternoon. Mr. Arthur said that so far there have been several keenly contested matches and the supporters could look forward to similar encounters as championship night nears.
He said that he is inspired by the competitive fixtures witnessed so far even as he noted that the lowly rated teams were impacting positively on the tournament. His observation stems from the earlier victories of Agricola over Victoria Kings, Mahaica Determinators over Santos and Ann’s Grove over Sunburst Camptown.
Those losers were considered powerful units and the pundits had already predicted easy wins for them. The upsets have been a regular pattern and now the pundits are not so anxious to predict a winner, preferring instead to judge the teams on their performances on competition night.
While the coordinator is cautious about making predictions, the Police coach, Earl O’Neil and his counterpart of HSU, Aaron Blackman, are both spouting confidence. “Our chances of winning (tonight’s) game is great and we are approaching the encounter full of confidence,” an enthusiastic Blackman exhorted.
He further boasted that his players are quite competent and primed up for a competitive duel. “The Police will need to come prepared in full battle dress because my boys are in a vengeful mood and all primed up,” said Aaron.
He said that his starting line-up is an ominous one and includes such players as the dependable Theon Carr and Leon Charles in the midfield and a strike force led by Jamaal Innnis. “The team will also have capable defenders in Delon Skeete and Karambo Holder,” assured Blackman.
The coach admitted that his squad is relatively young but has had valuable experience when they participated in the just concluded East Demerara FA league.
O’Neil, a former national player, will also field a competitive team and the ardent football fan will remember the good showing of the policemen in the just concluded 4th Annual GFA/Banks Cup Round Robin Knockout tournament last December. The lawmen had turned in determined displays and managed to advance to the quarter final stage before losing out to Western Tigers. O’Neil said that the team had returned to the drawing board and has worked ardently to correct its mistakes. “We are a compact unit and are coming with just victory on our minds,” he said.
O’Neil said that his strike force will consist of Rawle Haynes, Rondell Author and Junior Gordon while his defense cordon will be manned by the likes of Deon Rodney and Garson Baker, which will prove more than a handful for the East Coast team. “We are going all the way in this tournament unlike the previous one,” assured O’Neil.
The teams will rest tomorrow evening but will return on Friday when Riddim Squad tackles Golden Grove and Western Tigers face off with Agricola. Matches will also be played throughout the weekend at the same venue.
