Several teachers attached to the Mackenzie High School yesterday converged at the Regional Education Department to protest the “untenable situation” that currently prevails at the school.
The teachers, some of whom sat on the floor of the Regional Department verandah while others stood by, chanted vociferously, “this situation untenable, untenable is this situation, and we tired smelling (excrement).
According to informed sources, it has been several months since the main school building has been without running water. This newspaper also discovered that there is only one toilet available for approximately 40 female teachers.
Complaints were made to all the relevant authorities within the region, according to APNU Member of Parliament, Vanessa Kissoon, but to date nothing has been done to remedy the situation. One suggestion, according to Kissoon, was that the female staffers should share the same sanitary facilities as the female students. That suggestion was however rejected outright, Kissoon noted.
She added that when complaints were made to a “certain education official,” the response was, “Wha you want I do?”
The teachers are adamant that they will protest the untenable situation until it is rectified to their satisfaction.
