Jamaica Star – Kingston, Jamaica – Former West Indies umpire, Norman Malcolm, says now that he has been re-elected president of the Jamaica Cricket Umpires Association (JCUA), his mandate will be to finish the work he started back in 2002.
Malcolm, who recently resigned from the West Indies Panel of Umpires, was re-elected unopposed during the annual general meeting of the JCUA, held at the Rex Nettleford Hall, University of the West Indies last weekend.
“I’m ecstatic to have been re-elected, as I have some unfinished business as to where I would like to take the JCUA,” said Malcolm.
“It has been a successful journey so far where my team and I have been able to raise the standard and profile of umpires in the country.
“This has come about as a result of periodic training and assessment of umpires, and a yearly retreat whereby we update umpires as to the new rules and regulations of the game.”
Regional success
The 59-year-old, who stood in 27 one-day internationals and seven Twenty20 internationals before calling it a day, also spoke to elements of increased umpires and regional success as examples of the association’s work.
“Through extensive recruiting, we have been able to increase the cadre of umpires in all zones, which has allowed us to effectively officiate all competitions,” he said.
“Additionally, we have three guys who are on the senior West Indies Panel who are doing well, including Patrick Gustard, who recently officiated in the final of the WICB Super50 in Trinidad and Tobago.”
Verdayne Smith and Chris Taylor are the other Senior Panel umpires, with Chris Wright, Jacqueline Williams, and Athol Hamilton members of the West Indies Emerging Panel.
The JCUA AGM also saw the retention of several members of the association’s executive.
This includes Cecil Fletcher, first vice-president; Hugh Fogo, second vice-president; Dewith Coleman, third vice-president, Daniel Warren-Kidd, secretary; and Terrence Richards, treasurer.
