Trend threatens to continue tonight
By Michael Benjamin
A fair sized crowd of cheering supporters trooped to the Victoria Ground ECD and witnessed two pulsating matches and just as many upsets when the curtains went up on the Mayor’s Cup Football Championship at that venue last Friday evening.
Golden Grove started their match against Grove Hi Tech as the underdogs but when the final whistle blew, emerged victorious, compliments of a 4th minute success off the boot of Randy Stoby.
The night truly belonged to the underdogs as Agricola triumphed over home team, Victoria Kings 2-1, even after one of their players, Marlon Clarke, was given a red card after infringing the rules. John Gordon proved to be the saviour for Agricola after his team was trailing behind 1-0 at the intermission.
They conceded the advantage from a kick from the penalty spot by Victoria King’s captain, Calvin DeSouza, whose teammate, Alden Lawrence, had earlier been fouled in the box and DeSouza made no mistake. Ironically, DeSouza had also received a yellow card for an earlier indiscretion.
The ‘Kings’ were well on their way to an easy, predictable4 victory when John Gordon rained on their parade with precision shots in the 60th and 83rd minutes to seal the team for the East Bank team.
Activities shifted to Region 6 last evening when Rosignol United battled Cougars in the preliminary game to Monedderlust against New Amsterdam United. Those results will appear in tomorrow’s issue.
Meanwhile, the action will be at the Georgetown Football Club tonight when Santos FC tackle Mahaica while Camptown will go head to head with Ann’s Grove in the battle between East Coast and the Capital City.
While the pundits would predict an easy win for Santos, they should not ignore the players out of Mahaica Determinators, including defence player and captain, Jermaine Fraser. This former player out of Alpha has distinguished himself as a valuable utility player having played in almost every position. He will look for supporter from his strike force of Gavin Wilson, Anthony Abrams and his mid-fielder, Glenovan Edwards.
The ‘Determinators’ will believe they stand a very good chance with such players in their line-up as Curt Roberts, Quincy Holder, Shameer Nazir and Devon Harris. They may also have added confidence after noting that the underdogs are really kicking up a storm in the competition so far.
Camptown has already cemented its place among the top local teams and would want to start this year on a winning note. Reshawn Sandiford had been hungry for goals and ended last year on a favourable note. Notwithstanding a hat trick against Beacon FC, he was unable to make the difference in the GFA/Banks Beer Cup Round Robin football tournament in December and his team was ousted at the quarter finals stage. One would want to believe that Sandiford has retained that form and would come out blistering tonight.
He will receive support from strikers, Travis Martin and Stephen Roberts while the dependable, Troy ‘Bugsie’ Prescott will marshal the midfield cordon. Additionally, Joel Bond will patrol the defence cordon along with Lizhan Lord.
The Ann’s Grove payers are not prepared to throw in the towel merely because of s few big names; the players will obviously be judged on merit. The ECD team will field a strike force that consists of Quincy Johnson, midfielders, Kevon Barry, Maxwell Adams and Linden Roberts. The highly dependable Carlton Jerrick will also present a clear and present danger in the defence position.
From all indications, the underdogs are prepared to represent their territory even as the more established teams endeavour to retain their dominance. Naturally, this translates into all-out war and the fittest will be the ones to survive. Football buffs would obviously do well to flock the venue this evening as the war of attrition unfolds.
