Rain in Guyana’s Capitol washed the planned three-day practice game for the Guyana Jaguars team preparing for the resumption of the WICB’s Four-Day First-Class Franchise cricket and forced the players to a net
session on the final day of the scheduled contest yesterday.
Leaders Guyana Jaguars with 57 points are set to face Jamaica at Sabina Park from Friday in their fifth round clash with the second placed home team, on 50 points, aiming to end the round as leaders.
Crandon explained that while the rainy season at this time of the year usually hampers preparations for Regional Cricket, this time it’s not a major concern since apart from Berbice fast bowler Keon Joseph, every other member of the squad have been playing competitive cricket this year.
“It’s not a worry. While we would have liked to have a practice game before we left for Jamaica, everybody in the squad was either in the NAGICO Super50 competition or as in the case with Leon (Johnson) and Narsingh (Deonarine), in South Africa with the West Indies. So they have been playing cricket this month,” Crandon told Kaieteur Sport at Bourda yesterday.
The 33-year-old former Guyana pacer, who took 90 wickets and scored one half-century in 38 First-Class matches between 2001 & 2011, feels that the return of Johnson and Deonarine from South Africa strengthens the middle order although Assad Fudadin who broke his finger in South Africa will be missed.
Although they were not a part of the Jaguars team, Guyanese openers Shemron Hetmyer and Tagenarine Chanderpaul played for the West Indies under-19 team and were among the top batsmen in the NAGICO Super50 tournament.
Hetmyer, the Berbice teenager, has been rewarded with selection on this team, while young Chanderpaul could replace his father in the side if Shiv decides to leave to honor his overseas commitments before the tournament concludes.
The Guyana Head Coach is confident that the Jaguars could put their embarrassing defeat in One-Day final behind them. The Jaguars were dismissed for their lowest 50-over score of 65when Sunil Narine spun webs around them to claim 6-9 from 8 overs, before he opted out of the World Cup fearing that his bowling action was not yet ready for International scrutiny.
“I know we can put that (NAGICO Final) behind us in much the same way did when Barbados beat us at Providence and we bounced back to win our next game outright by beating the Red Force in Trinidad,” Crandon said.
Chasing 69 to win on the last day of their third round game last year, Barbados wrecked the Jaguars for 66, their third lowest First Class total, to win before Lunch on the final day of that contest.
Crandon would be remembered for his devastating spell of 7-125 against Trinidad & Tobago in 2006 at Guaracara Park when he claimed the first six wickets to fall including Brain Lara (for 153) after he was dropped by Wicketkeeper Derwin Christian early in his innings off the Rose Hall Town pacer. Crandon said he was satisfied with preparations and feels Guyana is one of the strongest batting teams in the tournament.
Chanderpaul, Deonarine and Johnson have all played Test and together forms an airtight middle order….at least on paper. The team leaves Guyana on Wednesday and will have another practice session at Bourda today, weather permitting.
