Guyanese-owned airline Fly Jamaica will be launching its newly approved non-stop flight service to and from New York soon. During an event at the company’s Guyana headquarters on Friday, airline officials announced that the non-stop flights from Georgetown, Guyana to New York in the United States will commence on February 18.
The Jamaica-based airline was previously required to stop over in Jamaica before making the trip on to New York. This however, will no longer be the case as the airline has been granted approval from the US to operate their non-stop service to the North American country.
The airline’s officials noted that there is much in store in terms of the company’s operations. This includes the addition of new routes to be serviced by the company, the provision of chartered flights and cargo transportation.
The company is also maintaining their free 50-pound, two piece check in along with one 20 pound carry on. The company introduced the new policy which accommodated many travelers during the peak Christmas season. While other airlines request a fee for the luggage, the company caters for the 50- pound and hand luggages at no extra cost.
Also, with the recent acquisition of the company’s new Boeing 767, the company says it will be better able to serve the Guyanese public and by extension the Caribbean. The Boeing 767 which has already commenced service here can seat over 240 passengers.
The wide- body craft is also plying the Georgetown, Toronto, Canada route. Come February, passengers travelling with Fly Jamaica will leave Guyana around 02:30hours, arriving in New York by 07:00hours. On their return to Guyana, passengers will leave around 9:00pm and arrive by 03:30am.
With the continued promotion of tourism in the Caribbean and with Guyana desperately seeking to position itself as an intransit hub between the Caribbean, North and South America, Fly Jamaica had registered its intention to focus its services here. They had noted last August that they were being asked to offer flight services to a major South American city.
A conference with representatives from tourism based countries such as the Bahamas and Jamaica, and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) had resulted in the offer to service a Brazilian port.
With a population of just over 200 million people, eight percent of whom were said to be travelling externally and since the company already services Guyana, which shares a border with the Portuguese speaking nation, it was assumed that the airline could accommodate operations in the neighbouring country.
One of the company’s Directors, Mrs. Roxanne Reece had also told local media workers that Caribbean passengers needed to support Caribbean carriers in a bid to maintain and boost the economies. In this way jobs could be created within the region and revenue she said, would also remain there.
Fly Jamaica is privately owned, mainly by Captain Ronald Reece and his wife Roxanne. They are the first and only private persons to own and operate their aircraft (Boeing 757 and 767) within the Caribbean.
