…search launched for missing man, boy, 7
A boat accident in the Tumatumari area, Region Eight, has left one dead and several injured. Up to press time, a seven-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man were still listed as missing.
Reports indicate that about 23:30 hours on Friday night a boat with seven passengers encountered mechanical problems while navigating the area in the vicinity of the hydro plant on the Potaro River.
The vessel reportedly drifted backwards and headed over the Tumatumari waterfall which is averaged to be about 35 – 40 feet in height.
Reports state that the body of 23-year-old Captain, Dennis Williams has been recovered, while two remain missing. Those missing have been identified as seven-year-old Jaeden Pereira of Micobie, Region Eight and 20-year-old Levi Isaacs of Monkey Mountain.
The injured are Sylvia Pio, her brother Crawford Pio and Clemson Andrew all of Micobie and Carl Joseph of Lethem.
Regional Executive Officer (REO) of Potaro/Siparuni (Region Eight), Ronald Harsawack said that a search and rescue operation has been launched in the area.
He explained that the search team, comprising of three boats from neighbouring villages and one provided by the administration, are currently combing the river from the area just below the waterfall to the mouth of the Potaro River.
He said that the Regional Administration has offered resources to the village for the search and rescue efforts.
According to him, the four persons rescued have suffered cuts, abrasions and other injuries. They were treated at the Micobie Health Center.
