It took a combined effort of defending by Mae’s to repel a second half onslaught
from North Georgetown to earn them a draw as the 3rd Annual Nestle Milo Under-20 Schools Football Competition got underway, at the Ministry of Education on Carifesta Avenue.
The Subryanville-based team made a positive start when Darsham Persaud received a long ball from inside his half, chested forward expertly, before cutting inside, dribbling his marker in the process and unleashing a stinging low left-footer that eluded the grasp of the goalkeeper and trickled over the goal-line in the 8th minute.
Bouyed by their initial success, Mae’s continued to press forward and was rewarded with another goal this time off the boots of Hakiem Hutson, who fired past the keepr from the left side to make it 2-0 after seventeen minutes of play.
The situation got even worse for North Georgetown when they conceded a third goal before the break when Hilbert Lawrence got into the act, slotting past the keeper in the 27th minute of play.
However, North Georgetown responded immediately with Joshua Perreira netting a brace in the 28th and 39th minutes to make it an interesting duel.
Jamal Glasgow’s act of indiscretion in the 59th minute when a ball sliced off his foot, before entering the goal, allowed North Georgetown to make a dramatic recovery to share the points.
In the opening encounter, Charlestown after enduring a determined first half effort from Freeburg, stamped their authority in the second period to romp to a comfortable 6-1 triumph.
Dicquan Osbourne led the way for the winners with a treble, netting in the 1st, 34th and 65th minutes, while Omari James 33rd, Joshua Persaud 42nd and Akeem Cosbert 49th completed their tally.
Queen’s College then squeezed past School of Nations 3-2 thanks to goals from Nicholas Spooner 26th, Lloyd Anderson 27th and Shemar Britton 43rd.
Shaquille Bess was the lone marksman for School of Nations, firing in his goals in the 23rd and 38th minutes of play.
Action in the competition resumes today with four more matches planned for the same venue.
