The 21st edition of the Mayor’s Cup Football Championships gets underway tonight with much fanfare and
football buffs are expected in their droves to witness a scorching double header at the Victoria Ground, ECD.
When the action gets underway at 19:00hrs Golden Grove will tackle Grove Hi Tech in the preliminary game to a showdown between Victoria Kings and Agricola starting at 21:00hrs.
Grove Hi Tech will be anxious to draw first blood and will field a competitive lineup that includes the skilful goalkeeper, Rondell Alleyne.
While he performs duties between the uprights he will look forward to support from his captain, Sherman Doris (midfielder) and Clive Matthews Jnr. (defender), to make the difference between a victory and a loss. This team will also look for support from utility players Lloyd Matthews and Wayne Andries. The lads from Golden Grove will also fancy their chances and are expected to field such stalwarts as Carlos Kingston (striker) along with defenders, Stephon Walcott and Randy Stoby.
The Victoria Kings/Agricola showdown, and East Coast and East Bank showdown will renew fierce rivalry of the past between the two associations.
Agricola will depend on its strike force of Gordon Grant and Sheldon Jerrick but must also be wary of the fact that the opposition will be stocking their armory with the likes of striker, Aubrey Sherwyn Gibson with Sherwyn Skeete and Alden Lawrence marshalling the midfield ranks. Agricola will also field such players as Lumumba Hinds and Kacy John in its lineup and will also fancy its chances.
The action continues tomorrow evening when the players travel to #5 West Coast Berbice where Rosignol
United would be at home to Cougars at 19:00hrs followed by Monedderlust up against New Amsterdam United two hours later.
Football fans will also be entertained on Sunday when four matches would be contested at two venues; Uitvlugt will compete against GFC while Pouderoyen tackle Police starting at 14:00hrs, both at the Den Amstel Community Centre Ground while Riddim Squad and Western Tigers will await the culmination of those matches to play the respective winners at the GFC Ground on Sunday.
