Police are to charge a Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara caretaker for
alleged negligence that led to two pit bulls escaping from a property and viciously attacking a ten-year-old schoolgirl.
A senior police official told Kaieteur News yesterday that the caretaker is to appear in court today. He was reportedly taken into custody, but was released on $40,000 station bail.
Police have also informed officials from the Guyana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) about the case. This newspaper was also told that the owner of the animals is in the interior and he is also likely to face charges.
According to information supplied to the police, the animals have been escaping through the fence surrounding the property, which is located on the Diamond access road near Fifth Avenue. Kaieteur News visited the area on Wednesday and saw that one of the dogs was tethered to the back step.
Jady Joseph, of Twenty-First Avenue, Diamond Housing Scheme, was walking on the Diamond access road on Tuesday when the dogs ran onto the roadway and attacked her. She was bitten on the legs and left hand, and only the presence of passersby, who threw stones at the dogs, saved her from further injury.
She was treated at the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital, but her mother, Latoya Joseph, said yesterday that the child is taking further treatment at a private hospital. She said that Jady remains in severe pain and this is aggravated by the fact that the wounds have to be cleaned daily. The child is also still traumatized, the mother added.
Kaieteur News understands that the person who owns the animals, travels frequently to the interior, and that the dogs are often left unattended.
This newspaper has received previous complaints of the dogs escaping from the property and attacking children.
