ASL plane runs off Kurupung airstrip

Three persons, including the pilot onboard a Britten Norman BN-2 Islander, walked away unhurt yesterday morning after their aircraft ran off the airstrip at an interior location.
The twin-engine craft belonging to local aviation company Air Services Limited (ASL) was said to be shuttling supplies to the jungle community when the pilot reportedly experienced brake difficulty after touching down.
The plane bearing registration number 8R-GAR left the Ogle Airport and arrived in Kurupung in Region Seven after 09:00hours. The incident is said to have taken place around 09:40hours. According to information, the pilot had lined up the plane for landing, but after touching down on the runway the brakes did not respond.
While it is unclear whether the pilot would have swerved the plane to force the reduction of speed, the plane ended up leaving the airstrip, coming to a stop alongside it. The occupants suffered no injury and information reaching the newspaper is that the plane would have suffered relatively minor damage.
Head of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) Zulphicar Mohamed confirmed the incident to Kaieteur News. He told the newspaper that the plane ran off the airstrip and inspectors were at the time on their way to the location to commence investigations. He said that the authorities have been told so far that the aircraft may have suffered minor damage.
This latest incident comes just days after a search was called off for a missing aircraft that went down in another interior region last December.  Another ASL Britten Norman Islander aircraft went missing on December 29 last when it was shuttling construction supplies from Mahdia to Karisparu in the Potaro-Siparuni region. A 28-year-old pilot and his 51-year-old cargo handler were the only occupants. A 21-day search turned up empty handed.
In May of last year a downdraft was blamed for a hard landing that had also occurred at the Kurupung airstrip. It involved on that occasion, a Trans-Guyana Britten Norman Islander aircraft that damaged its landing gear. Six persons walked away without injury after the pilot had experienced difficulty.
