I sat next to Adam Harris in the Kaieteur News gym waiting for other staffers to travel together to attend the wake of the wife of senior Kaieteur News employee, Mike Baptiste. Adam and I went through various permutations of the 2015 election results.
I am not at liberty to discuss Adam’s outlines. I said; “Adam, who really advises the PPP; why would a government allow a Minister to chase a little girl selling water on the parapet; why bring dislike on yourself for appointing Bibi Shadick as Pro-Chancellor when you already have someone doing the work for you at UG?”
I will now disclose that particular response of Adam. He murmured, “Boy, I don’t think they have too many thinkers in their midst.” Is it that the PPP does not have too many thinkers within their leadership? Or is it that the authoritarian mind cannot see reality and thus does the most hateful, stupid and unnecessary things?
Dozens, (not several) times I have mentioned in these columns the theory that dictatorship cannot redeem itself because the capacity to do so is lost. Redemption of self comes from the conscious recognition that the reality out there is not in your favour. So out of that cognitive process, you fit yourself into that reality. I will offer readers just one example so they can properly assess my point.
If you are currently embroiled in a controversy in your workplace and right there and then there is election for the union’s shop steward position, it may be best not to damage your future goal of leadership of the union by contesting it. Wait until the storm blows over.
To implement this strategy you have to be aware that the controversy may cause you to lose.
I ran into one of the relatives of Cheddi Jagan in the supermarket and we talked about the possible election results. He didn’t put it in academic terms, but in his own way he was echoing the theory of irrationality in dictatorship. He said; “Freddie, you think those people will change? You see how Rohee behaves on the television?”
The chasing of the little girl selling her bottled water, the imposition of Bibi Shadick on UG and countless other instances of the unnecessary things will continue to be done by the PPP weeks and days into the General Election, because reality cannot and will not be recognized by the authoritarian mind.
Enter Bharrat Jagdeo. It is clear to any sane person that the PPP high command met and has identified Bharrat Jagdeo as one of its brains for the election campaign. Why would the PPP do this? Because nowhere in the collective mind of the PPP, Jagdeo has committed even a small sin. In that collective mind, Jagdeo is a trump card because he is popular and will give the PPP victory.
This is not only mental masturbation, it is mental insipidness. Mr. Jagdeo is a factor of the past. His reign lasted for twelve years and despicable and horrible things were committed during his tenure that has made him a liability in any election. The PPP could chose Jagdeo three months before the campaign officially begins but once the fever is released as the campaign heats up, Mr. Jagdeo’s record will take an enormous beating. If any figure in the PPP is vulnerable to rhetorical slaughter when the opposition politicians stand on the podium during the campaign, it will be Jagdeo.
One thought it would have been best to keep him out of sight in Berbice because of the bridge toll and the collapse of Guysuco among other vexed issues. In Guyana as a whole, Mr. Jagdeo’s record is seen as one that catered for the rich only. In the heat of battle in May, his credibility is going to take some hammering because he is associated with shaping an economy that benefited only the wealthy. In fact, it is no secret in Guyana that Mr. Jagdeo’s closest intimates are billionaires.
Of course there is another dimension to the Jagdeo inclusion story. Did the PPP leaders voluntarily choose Jagdeo to be fronted in the campaign or did Jagdeo choose himself?
Given the way he used his twelve years of presidency to reduce the PPP to his special tool, there is sufficient evidence to suggest that Mr. Jagdeo instructed that Ramotar be selected again for the presidential slot and that he, Jagdeo, would kick-start the campaign.
How often do we read that ancient quote; “Whom the gods wish to destroy they first make mad.” The god that never achieved anything is back and he will destroy his fellow gods in months to come.
