(GRFU) plans to field a female team, at the 2015 NACRA Sevens in USA in June.
According to a release from the Union, the support for the team’s presence at this year’s championships was aided by the men’s success, while it is the entity’s hope that the women could add to their 2008, 2009 and 2010 titles.
The release added that the women are not only going for a fourth title, but will be seeking to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympics.
If they win the NACRA 7s championships or place second or third they then qualify for a playoff against similar placed teams from the other Regional associations early in 2016.
Canada and USA are their main threats to Guyana’s success, but with the current placing of both teams on the world circuit there is a very good possibility that they may pre-qualify without having to participate at NACRA in June.
The National team will be sporting a blend of experience and new players.
Meanwhile, a cost of USD 43,000 will be needed to send the women to the tournament.
