Dear Editor,
I write concerning the ongoing APNU-AFC pro-democracy talks due to conclude in four weeks. Guyana anxiously awaits confirmation that an alliance has been forged between these two progressive entities.
However difficult these negotiations may be, the two negotiating teams must practise putting Guyana first and never losing sight of the goal which is to rid Guyana of the dominant evil.
No doubt, both sides will want the grand alliance leader to come from their ranks. In the final analysis and given what’s at stake, it matters not. What matters more, is the big picture—the creation of a country that is fair to all who live here—provides adequately for all its citizens and embraces a decision-making process that includes all stakeholders and not just a clutch of deviant characters.
The Japanese have a saying that a good negotiation is defined as one, which after it concludes, leaves both parties happy or both parties unhappy. It is this symmetry that the two negotiating groups have to achieve for Guyana’s sake. Knowing most of the negotiating members as well as I do, I am confident they will succeed.
