Sizzling action has been promised when footballers from the country’s top teams take to the field for the 21st edition of the Mayor’s Cup Football Championships. Activities get underway this Friday January 30 and conclude Saturday February 22.
Yesterday morning, representatives of most of the participating teams convened at the Avenue of the Republic headquarters of the Mayor and City Council where Mayor Hamilton Green officially launched the tournament.
He complimented Mr. Arthur for his meticulous organizing skills and said that he is assured that the tournament would achieve the success of the previous years. Mr. Green said that the tournament has always provided the avenue for youngsters to expel their energies even as they engaged in productive activities.
”The experts have said that sport is not only a catalyst to physical and mental development but it also has the proclivity to keep young people on the right side of the law,” pronounced Mr. Green.
The Chief Citizen lamented the paucity of adequate corporate input and blamed it on the adverse social environment. Nonetheless, he added his voice to that of the organizers and urged the intervention of the corporate community towards the success of the tournament.
Coordinator of activities, Lennox Arthur said that all systems are in place and fans could look forward to the usual excitement associated with the tournament over the years. He informed that the prizes are lucrative with the winning team pocketing one million dollars. The runners up will win $300,000 while the 3rd and 4th places will win $200,000 and $100,000 respectively.
Meanwhile, when the action gets underway on Friday evening, Golden Grove will play Grove Hi Tech in the first of fixture slated for the Victoria Ground ECD starting at 19:00hrs. Two hours later, Victoria Kings will battle with Agricola.
