… and dumped at crime scene
Nicholas James, the suspected bandit who was shot by a plainclothes police rank when he and three of his accomplices tried to rob the Popeyes Fast Food Restaurant on Vlissengen Road Sunday night, yesterday, said that he was kidnapped by two men, both of whom were armed.
James, who was shot in his buttocks, is a patient under police guard at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Police in a release said that investigations, so far, have revealed that an armed man entered Popeye’s Restaurant at Vlissengen Road, Georgetown, and ordered customers to lie on the ground.
The release added that an armed bandit attacked and robbed Darryl Seruggs, a customer, of his cell phone.
According to the release, the suspect was eventually confronted by a plainclothes rank. Shots were fired and James was wounded.
The wounded man explained that he rented a car and was in Parika, East Bank Essequibo when two men held him up at gunpoint.
James said that one of the two men then shot him and dumped him on Vlissengen Road before escaping in his rented vehicle.
However, Kaieteur News was told that James and his accomplices came face-to-face with a policeman when they tried to rob the restaurant.
According to reports, the policeman was purchasing food around 20:00 hrs Sunday night when James reportedly stormed into the fast food outlet and demanded all customers to lie on the floor, He then went to the cashier and demanded money.
This newspaper was told that James’s alleged accomplices, who were waiting for him outside the restaurant, escaped when they saw that he was wounded. Sunday’s attack on the fast food outlet at Vlissengen Road was not the first time that armed men stormed into the building.
On November 17, last, an armed bandit escaped with an undisclosed sum of cash.
And, on September 13, last, two armed men, reportedly with kerchiefs over their faces, escaped with over $1M in cash after they held up the supervisor, 27-year-old Mahendra Persaud.
Prior to that, on February 29, 2012 two men, reportedly armed with a shotgun, escaped with an undisclosed sum of cash after holding up employees at the same fast food branch.
And on February 14, 2010, two armed men entered the same outlet via the back door. They then grabbed two female supervisors and forced them to hand over $1.2M.s
