Harresh Singh is confident of regaining his title as Chutney King when he performs next Saturday at the Anna Regina Community Centre with his song,”Meh Dulahin run away.”
The appealing song, composed by the Essequibo artiste, has a strong and applicable message. It actually depicts the realistic social behavioral patterns that are sometimes exhibited by many in today’s society.
“The message behind the song is my best friend wife run away with me on the night of the wedding,” Singh said.
Singh will be competing against nineteen other contestants for the 2015 Chutney title. His return to this year’s National Chutney competition after a four year lapse has to do with the overwhelming encouragement he has received from people, who continue to admire his talent, especially as a successful local singer. Singh who has won five previous titles as Chutney King, has three consecutive wins under his belt, along with two other wins between 2007-2012.
Singh who recently returned from Georgetown, where he was engaged in rehearsals, says his opponents are terrified of him, since he is regarded as a strong contender.
“My record speaks for itself. I’ve won five times and I am confident that my song is going to do well.”
The Essequibian was born in 1973. He is the fourth child of his parents, Ninawattie, and the late Khelessar Singh.
As a boy, he attended the C. V. Nunes Primary then went on to the Anna Regina Multilateral Secondary School.
It was, however, at age15 where his singing talent was first recognised. Displaying his singing talents at almost every local and Regional competition held on the Essequibo Coast, Singh said he participated in twenty eight Bollywood competitions, placing first in all.
He actually grew up in a family that sang in local orchestras. In fact, Singh’s late father Khelessar and his uncle Mohan Singh were the owners of the ‘Naya Zama’ and the ‘Telstar’. The orchestras, Singh recalled, supported international artistes and also performed at weddings and even played on the local radio station.
Singh also sang at karaoke competitions before he got his big break in 2001, after winning his first Chutney title with his song “Brinda Ban”.
Two other wins followed in consecutive years after 2001. He won again in 2007 and 2012, but said that ‘personal reasons’ kept him from participating in 2014.
Singh would like the Government of Guyana to implement the copyright laws to safeguard local songs from piracy. According to Singh, he plans to tour both locally and internationally once he is crowned the 2015 Chutney winner.
He has already recorded 13 of his songs and hopes to compile them on discs.
He has thirteen of his written and composed songs already recorded and hopes to compile them on discs.
Some of Singh’s winning songs include,”Brinda Ban”, “Bhat Se Milay”, “Bansay Aja”, “Next door neighbor and “Aja,Aji.”
