The growth of Softball cricket continued rapidly in 2014, this was largely due to the competence of the Georgetown Softball Cricket League (GSCL
Inc), who managed to successfully stage a number of tournaments. The performances of Regal and Wolf’s Warriors remained unmatched for yet another year.
The Republic Cup, which was contested by the most of the leading teams locally, was a major success. Wolf’s Warriors held their nerves to beat Trophy Stall by eight runs at the Everest Cricket Club in the final.
Wolf’s Warriors were largely indebted to Safraz Karim, Vishnu Tammechandra, Amir Nizamudeen, Davanand Persaud and Dianand Singh for their win. Regal copped the Masters title, thanks to sterling performances from Mahendra Arjune and Eric Thomas. Trophy Stall Angels took the female crown.
Regal then captured the Winston Murray Memorial tournament with a 61-run win over Speed Boat XI at the Everest Cricket Club. Martin Dutchin was Regal’s trump card hitting an unbeaten 74, he was ably supported by Fazal Rafeek, Safraz Esau, Mohamed Ayube and Sachin Singh.
Wolf’s Warriors was the next champion capturing the Rafman Ali open title, while Regal Masters were crowned winners of the over-40 category.
Wolf’s Warriors overcame archrivals Regal by 41 runs in the final while Regal Masters got the better of Parika Defenders by 72 runs.
Regal then inked their name on the Open and Masters Trophies of the Independence Cup while Trophy Stall Angels and Mike’s Wellwoman were joint female winners. In the open, Regal thumped Memorex by seven wickets.
Chien Gittens, Lakeram Roopnarine and Richard Latiff were the outstanding performers for the winners.
In the Masters category Younis Yusuf, Eric Thomas, Mahendra Arjune and Longsford Klass were the standouts for Regal.
GFSCA Guyana Softball Cup four
Teams from New York, Canada and Florida competed against their Guyanese counterparts, but it the end it was Wolf’s Warriors of West Coast Demerara who came out on top defeating Regal XI by five runs in open segment. Floodlights overcame Savage Masters by five wickets in the over 40 division. Ricardo Adams grabbed the man of the match award while Lennox Marks (open) and Yusuf Yunnis (over-40) were the most valuable players. Other outstanding performances came from Tammechandra of Wolf’s Warriors, Amit Moonsammy of New York All Star (five -wicket hauls), Jagdesh Persaud of East Coast Masters and Yusuf of Floodlight (scored centuries).
Regal rebounded by defeating Wolf’s Warriors by 65 runs in the Rohan and Ramchand Auto Spares competition. Regal’s victory was largely due to the batting of Latiff, Keon Joseph and Safraz Esau.
Floodlights overcame Mike’s Wellman by eight wickets in the over-40 final. Trophy Stall Angels thumped Mike’s Wellwoman to win the female division.
Some of the top performances came from, Ricardo Adams (open), Wayne Jones (over-40) and Latoya Smith (female)-Most Valuable Players; Patrick Khan (Farm), Sadik Yusuf (Farm), Diaram Persaud and Narine Bailey of Wolf’s Warriors took five-wicket hauls. Adams Harrinarine Dilchand (Uprisers), Patrick Khan, Nizam Khan (Challengers) and Ejaz Mohamed (Uprisers) scored centuries in the open division.
The Over-40 centurions were John Samir (Floodlights), Danny Gangadin (Fisherman), Wayne Jones (Floodlight) and N. Chand (Industry).
