All of the country’s top cyclists are expected to don their cycling gear and head to Berbice today when former national cyclist Wilbert Benjamin in collaboration with the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) stage the third annual ‘Benjamin Sports Store ’ open cycle race on the Corentyne Highway.
The 50 miles event is expected to pedal off at 09:00hrs from Fyrish Village in front of the Benjamin Sports Store and proceed to the No 51 Police station before returning to its place of origin. The veterans, females and beginners are expected to turn around at Nand Persaud and Company Limited and return to the place of origin covering a distance of 30 miles.
There will be prizes for the first six finishers, the top three juniors, the first three veterans and the first three females to cross the finish line. There will also be eight sprint point prizes up for grabs.
A grueling event is anticipated as the riders will be looking to take an early advantage into the new season. Double defending champion Orville Hinds of Linden will be out to prove himself, but will not have it easy as the other cyclists will be looking for the early advantage as they compete for the cash prizes up for the taking.
The visiting riders will also have to be at their best as the Berbice cyclists will be determine to regain lost ground in their quest for glory.
Benjamin, a native of Berbice, was a former national cyclist who represented Guyana at both the junior and senior levels including the Pan Am and the Texaco games. He was also a former school and junior champion who won the national schools championship on three consecutive occasions. He still rides in his adopted home land of Canada where he also operates a sports store. He returns home on a regular basis and would assist his club and teams in whatever way possible.
At present he is one of the top cycle race sponsors in the county where he sponsors three races with lucrative prizes. Apart from the Benjamin Sports store race, he sponsors an event for his father’s birth anniversary and another race for his mother’s birthday.
The race will be coordinated by cycling coach Randolph Roberts.
The presentation ceremony will be held immediately after the completion of the event.
Cyclists are reminded that they must ride in their club colours.
