Months of painstaking planning and execution are finally paying off for the administration and ranks of the police East Coast Demerara division. They continue to reduce crime in an area that was once the crime capital of Guyana.
While the overall police statistics showed an overall decline of 11 percent in reported serious crimes for 2014, this is probably bolstered by the success of the East Coast Division which recorded a 15 percent reduction for the same offences in 2014, compared with the previous year.
The decline is significant, since the downward trend started from a position of increased criminal activity in 2013.
A look at the figures coming out of the division, it was noted that serious crimes increased from 557 as at 2012 year end to 654 at the end of 2013.
But increased surveillance and enforcement brought serious crimes down on East Coast Demerara to 552 at the end of last year.
Among the crimes monitored were murder, robbery, robbery under arms (with gun) robbery under arms (with other instruments), kidnapping, break and enter and larceny, rape and burglary.
There were reductions in almost all the categories monitored with robbery, burglary and larceny from the person showing the biggest declines, dipping 40, 54 and 81 percent respectively.
There were 19 murders in the Division last year, two less than in 2013.
Robbery under arms with guns accounted for 140 of the serious crimes reports in 2014, six less than the previous year.
The biggest problem for crime fighters in the division remains break and enter and larceny, with 217 reported incidents last year.
Police in the Division have credited their success to the hard work of the officers and ranks, who are operating under strength and with limited resources.
A check in the Division revealed the dire need for increased manpower and vehicle support to continue the success that was obtained last year.
At present, mobile patrol units are operating with vehicles that are grossly unfit for the task they have to perform and stations are being manned by constables at times.
Meanwhile, police are keeping a close eye on the Sophia area, which they have been able to tame for the while.
This newspaper was informed that the area showed a huge decline of 51 percent in serious crimes with every category showing big reductions
“Sophia is like a volcano, it can erupt at anytime, so we have to knock wood and keep the lid on the area,” a police source at Turkeyen told this newspaper.
So far this year there has been little to report in serious crimes in Sophia.
“The only thing of note, so far, is when that man burn up them people in a house,” the source said.
