Boxing fans experiencing some amount of disappointment following the aborted title fight between former WBA welterweight champion, Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis and Jamaica’s ‘Contender’ Champion, Sakima Mullings, would have felt consoled that world rated, Clive Atwell has filled the void and will tackle the Jamaican on Saturday February 21 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).The organizers are still to decide which title these two will be fighting for.
Atwell is expected in Guyana from Dominica sometime today and will sign the contract during the week. While anticipation would be high and all eyes will be on this bout, there are several other fights that promise to provide entertainment for those attending the card. Edmond DeClou will be back following a prolonged absence to allow his broken jaw to heal. He sustained this injury during a bout with super/middleweight champion, Dereck Richmond, and was side-lined following the doctor’s order. Naturally, he would be out to avenge the loss when they collide in a rematch in an 8 rounds middleweight clash.
Those that have seen DeClou in action know his ability and would obviously welcome his return to the fray but Richmond is also no slouch and he will enter the bout brimming with confidence as he attempts to replicate his previous feat.
Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) champion, Dexter Marques, was to have fought up and coming, Quincy Gomes, in a non-title 4 rounds catchweight bout. That fight was also cancelled and Gomes will now clash with debutant, Keeve Allicock. One suspects that the promoters had a rethink after realizing that Marques’ experience far outweighs that of his opponent who has merely chalked up 2 fights. Marques, on the other hand, has already won the local bantamweight and the CABOFE titles.
Gomes won both of his fights to date but it was his victory over recently crowned local super/bantamweight champion, Richard Williamson, one fight before Williamson won the belt that has distinguished him as a class act. Gomes accepted that bout on late notice and his display of counter punching coupled with his superb fitness truly impressed the pundits.
Friday afternoon, he was at work at the Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym, under the guidance of coach, George ‘Canchi’ Ophrect, and with 5 weeks to his ring date, seems to be in reasonable shape. The youngster shadow boxed for several rounds before turning his attention to the speed ball. Before the afternoon was done Gomes was also taken through his paces on the strike pads before engaging in a session of weights lifting. He closed off sessions with a hectic 15 minutes on the jump rope.
Mr. Ophrect was pleased with the work ethic of his charge and said that he is rounding nicely into shape. He also said that Gomes commences his road work exercises at 04:00hrs each day and covers some four miles. The young pugilist has not officially commenced sparring sessions but took advantage of the presence of Kesney Joseph, a bantamweight boxer from French Guiana, who was here for a few days under the auspices of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA).
Joseph has since left Guyana but not before sparring with Gomes for a few days. Mr. Oprecht feels that his charge had benefitted immensely from the workout with the French pugilist. He said that Gomes will soon commence similar activity with his fellow boxers and he (Oprecht) would be endeavoring to correct some flaws observed during his sessions with the French boxer.
The boxers will sign their respective contracts sometime this week and the other fighters on show are American, Lorisse Rivas up against Sharon Ward in a 6 rounds super/middleweight bout, while Travis Fraser will tackle Barbadian, Charwyn Eswick in a 4 rounds junior/middleweight clash.
