A 22-year-old larceny suspect hanged himself with his own shirt at around 19.30 hrs yesterday at the East Ruimveldt Police Station Outpost.
A police release stated that Tiffon Peters, of East Ruimveldt, was found hanging in a cell from his shirt which he had stripped into a cloth-rope and tied to the metal grill work of the lock-ups. At the time, he was in the cell with another prisoner, who was awakened by gasping sounds and alerted the police after seeing Peters hanging.
Kaieteur News understands that the victim was an itinerant vendor who suffered periodically from mental illness.
The release stated that Police Office of Professional Responsibility is conducting investigations into the incident.
According to the release, Peters was taken into custody at around 14.30hrs yesterday following investigations into a report of simple larceny of $25,000 committed on Dhanwattie Singh of Houston, East Bank Demerara.
The incident occurred at Vlissengen Road and Mandela Avenue and the suspect had been charged for court today.
Kaieteur News was told that while in his cell, Peters told his cell mate “me ain able with this court thing.”
According to a source, the other inmate was preparing to sleep when he heard a “cracking sound.” He reportedly then saw Peters dangling from the cell bars by his shirt.
The release stated that Peters was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he was pronounced dead.
Contrary to this statement, the body was removed from the outpost by porters from the Lyken Funeral Parlour.
On hearing of the prisoner’s death, a small group of residents gathered outside the outpost, while the inmate’s mother stood by the doorway singing hymns loudly.
The woman told reporters that she last saw her son alive at around noon yesterday when she had bought a puri for his lunch, along with his medication. She indicated that her son had suffered from mental illness and that he had undergone psychiatric treatment.
