A chainsaw operator and labourer arrested for allegedly stealing a large quantity of lumber from the logging concession where they are employed were granted bail to the tune of $60,000 yesterday.
Danguan Sukhu, a 52-year-old chainsaw operator of Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke-Linden and Ramraj Persaud, a 34-year-old labourer of Lot 83 Section ‘C’ Plantation Hope, Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The men are accused of stealing 4500 board measure (BM) of wood which cost $900,000 between December 5 and December 7, 2014 at Issano Road, Omai, Essequibo River. The wood belonged to Bharat Nandlall.
The case was prosecuted by Inspector Michael Grant. He did not oppose bail since the men were released on station bail. Grant did not present facts in court.
The men are expected to return to court on February 6.
