A security guard who plastered a false licence plate to a car he was using back in 2013 has been fined $1M and jailed for 24 months.
Leroy Holder, of Lot 25 D’Urban Street, Werk-en-Rust, was yesterday handed the maximum sentence on a fraudulent imitation of an identification mark charge by Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The D’Urban Street resident was charged with fraudulently imitating the identification marked PNN5687 on a vehicle registered PNN8437 on July 5, 2013 at Camp Street Georgetown.
According to the Prosecution, about 15:30 hours that day ranks were on mobile patrol when they received a tip. The ranks saw motor car PNN 5687 and as a result proceeded towards the vehicle when they saw Holder in the driver’s seat.
Police Prosecutor Joel Ricknauth disclosed that at the time, Holder was being pursued as a robbery suspect. He said that the ranks checked the car documents and noticed that the number plate should have been PNN8437 and not PNN5687.
The prosecutor said that Holder was arrested and taken to the Brickdam Police Station where a charge was instituted against him.
During his first arraignment before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on July 8, 2013, Holder pleaded not guilty to the charge and the matter was subsequently transferred to Magistrate Latchman.
During trial, the Prosecutor called four witnesses to prove the case against Holder. Ruling yesterday, Magistrate Latchman found him guilty of the offence.
In sentencing, the Magistrate said that the courts need to send a strong message against such a practice. She noted that police ranks depend on number plates in the fight against crime. She added that the Court ought to act as a deterrent and send a clear message to anyone contemplating to commit such an act.
