A La Parfaite Harmonie taxi driver, who took advantage of a woman and robbed her of the gold chain she was wearing but did not cater for the response of an alert public spirited citizen, has been jailed for 36 months.
The man, Gregory House, 43, of Lot 60 Recht-Door-Zee, La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, was jailed by Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court after she found him guilty of a simple larceny charge.
The bandit was charged with robbing Natasha Sheriff of her $65,000 gold chain on Regent Street, Georgetown on November 4, 2014.
According to the prosecution, it was about 11:45 hours that day on Regent Street when House approached the woman and snatched her gold chain and ran away.
The woman raised an alarm and a public-spirited person caught the defendant some distance away and held him until the police arrived. During a search of his person by the police the gold chain was reportedly found in his pocket.
The case was prosecuted by Inspector Shellon Daniels. Though he initially denied the allegations, he was found guilty.
