With more than 90 per cent of households now receiving electricity for the first time in Angoy’s Avenue, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and a senior
team from Guyana Power & Light (GPL) are expected to commission the Angoy’s Avenue Electrification Project later today at Timmer’s Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, Berbice.
The project fell within the ambit of the Unserved Areas Electrification Programme (UAEP). Expected to make remarks, too, is Mr. Winston Brassington, Director of GPL’s Board.
Additonally, Regional Chairman, Mr. David Armogan, representatives from the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) and Community Development Group (CDC) will also be in attendance.
Numerous residents expressed dissatisfaction at the slothful pace of the entire project, especially when GPL had to connect the homes to the network. While all the infrastructural works were completed by the contractor on time, the actual connection to the network and issuing of meters, took longer than was anticipated.
Loss Reduction Coordinator attached to the Guyana Power & Light Inc (GPL) Berbice Operations, Mr. Phalyanjee Nandkumar, told Kaieteur News recently that GPL is not at fault for the late connections of numerous residents in Angoy’s Avenue.
He said that just over 35 residents applied for electricity services between December 15 and December 20 (the timeframe given by the government for residents to apply for electricity if they wanted to receive power for Christmas).
The company’s metering department can only act on applications that have been submitted and verified by the Ministry of Housing and Water. He said that while new applications are being made every single day by residents of Angoy’s Avenue, the delay in the processing is mainly due to the verification of the applications which has to be done by the Commercial Department.
