Speaker of the National Assembly, Raphael Trotman, M.P., yesterday bid farewell to outgoing British High Commissioner, Andrew Ayre, who is set to
end his duties in Guyana shortly. According to a statement from the Speaker, High Commissioner Ayre “voiced his sadness at leaving Guyana, but took the opportunity to express his satisfaction with the accomplishments of the High Commissioner during his tenure as well as disappointment that some targets were not, as at the time of departure, reached.”
Trotman, in thanking the Ambassador for his contributions to the development of the Parliament, noted that the United Kingdom is a key developmental partner of the Parliament of Guyana. He vowed to welcome and support the incoming Ambassador.
Ayre also welcomed the announcement of a date for elections by President Donald Ramotar.
“Their discussions then focused on the upcoming General and Regional elections, the dissolution of Parliament, and the possibility of a budget being passed before elections.”
On Tuesday, the President, in face of mounting local and international pressure, announced that General and Regional Elections would be held on May 11, effectively cutting short his five-year term by two.
The High Commissioner also came under flak last week after he criticized November’s prorogation of Parliament by President Donald Ramotar.
The diplomat had warned that the continued Parliamentary suspension could see a halt in developmental aid, among other sanctions.
Ayre has already paid a farewell visit to Opposition Leader, Brigadier (ret’d) David Granger.
