An East Canje businessman is now counting his losses after a fire of still unknown origin ripped through the bottom flat of the two-storey building Tuesday morning.
Fanton Mangal, 37, of lot 112 Cumberland Road, East Canje, Berbice, who occupies the building which houses the Sunflower Liquor Restaurant and Bar, said that he was asleep in the upper flat of the building around noon when he smelt something burning. He stated that he immediately aroused from his slumber and ran downstairs.
He did not expect to see fire; the entire bottom flat was on fire.
The distraught man who operates a food and liquor restaurant stated that he was not sure what caused the fire. He estimated his loss at millions of dollars. Nothing was saved. He stated that his business was his sole source of income.
While the fire ravaged the bottom flat of the building, the top flat which houses his living quarters was threatened and badly scorched. During the initial stage of the fire, residents quickly rushed to the scene and formed a bucket brigade and assisted in dousing the fire.
The fire service was summoned and arrived on the scene along with a Land Rover from the nearby Rose Hall estate.
The fire fighters were able to save most of the top half of the building. The nearby building was also saved.
The man’s wife, Devi Guyadin, was in shock and unable to speak with the media. According to eyewitnesses, the fire began in the middle of the bottom flat of the home where the business is located and then quickly spread through the entire bottom flat, destroying everything in its path.
The businessman stated that he is not sure what will be his next move, since he has lost most of his savings.
According to a reliable source the fire began under the counter in the shop and is suspected to be electrical in nature.
