…pregnant woman, 3 children taken into custody
A vessel carrying a quantity of marijuana was intercepted at Itaballi, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) on on Monday and several persons, including a child as young as one-year-old, were taken into police custody.
Reports have indicated that at about 14:00 hours on Monday the police conducted a search on the vessel which had just arrived in the area. They reportedly found the illicit substance in the bow of the boat.
At the time, there were said to be nine persons on the vessel, all of whom were taken into custody.
The mother of one of the detainees contacted this newspaper and expressed concern for her pregnant daughter and two grandchildren. According to the woman, her daughter who lives at Timehri, East Bank Demerara was coming to pay her a visit with her five-year-old grandson and one-year-old granddaughter when the boat was intercepted.
She told this publication that her daughter is now at the Bartica Police Station and after spending over a day in custody, her grandchildren were taken by welfare officials. According to the woman, they were taken to the hospital.
The woman was upset because she received word that her grandchildren were being given to “residents in the area.” Kaieteur News was told that another woman and her 12-year-old son were also apprehended.
Meanwhile, a rank attached to the station has confirmed that several persons were taken into custody as investigations continue.
