Outgoing British High Commissioner, Andrew Ayre, was yesterday briefed by Leader of the Opposition, Brigadier (Ret’d) David Granger, on the current political standoff.
The diplomat was at the time paying a farewell visit. He is expected to hand over to Greg Quinn.
According to the office of the Opposition Leader, Granger took the opportunity to brief the outgoing envoy on APNU’s interpretation of the current political climate, the absence of Local Government elections, the continued prorogation of the National Assembly and the looming General and Regional Elections.
“The Leader of the Opposition and his team wished the outgoing High Commissioner well in his new endeavours,” a statement from Granger’s office indicated.
Ayre last week drew the ire of Government after he called on the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) to end the current suspension of Parliament by either calling General Elections or resuming the sittings of the National Assembly.
Government, in slamming the diplomat for meddling, made it clear that they were happy to see him leave.
The envoy had said that his Government is paying close attention to the prorogation of Parliament which was announced late last year by President Donald Ramotar shortly before his administration was due to face a no-confidence motion by the Opposition.
The Leader of the Opposition was accompanied to the meeting by APNU’s Shadow Minister for Public Infrastructure, Joseph Harmon; Shadow Minister for Regional and Hinterland Development, Ronald Bulkan, and Director of Communications, Mark Archer.
