Essequibo Coast residents whose farms and homes have been flooded following incessant rains last Thursday are expected to get some respite today with the installation of a pump in the affected communities.
The pump was installed yesterday after President Donald Ramotar visited Walton-Hall, Hampton, Lima, Three Friends and Reliance Court on Saturday. The President commenced his visit by first inspecting a sluice at Devonshire-Castle then another at Hampton Court Village. He had also promised residents that a pump would be installed at Hampton Court.
Residents were afforded the opportunity to vent their frustrations on how they are affected by the flood.
Devika Persaud, of Three Friends said numerous complaints were lodged with members of the Anna Regina Town Council about a clogged-up trench in front of her home and nothing has been done to remedy the situation.
She said the situation is dire, since water has reached into her bottom flat.
Another resident, Dewattie Sundar, of Devionshire Castle, said she has never experienced so much water on her land.
“Since morning me wake up, water a come up, imagine water never stick up so long, my entire kitchen is under water.”
The Head of State added that the most affected areas would be disilted to bring relief to those Communities in order for residents to return to normal life.
Meanwhile, Junior Agriculture Minister, Alli Baksh said efforts are in train to release a large quantity of fuel to the Region soon for the pumps to function. Baksh added that on his visit to Queenstown and Devonshire- Castle on Saturday, he was told by residents that some farmlands, as well as livestock, were under water.
Earlier Saturday, Chief Executive officer, Lionel Wordsworth who also visited the Coast and conducted inspections of the sluices, indicated that dredging equipment, along with pumps, would be sent to the Region to aid in alleviating drainage in areas that are affected by flood waters.
Words worth said from his assessment, the Windsor Castle/Hampton Court Sluice was not functioning as a result of the presence of ‘sling mud’.
“It is not the sluice that is out of order but the sluices are experiencing a high degree of siltation.”
The CEO added that the pumps at Three Friends and Anna Regina were in operation. He said areas predominantly affected were Anna Regina, Lima, Reliance, Devonshire Castle, Sparta and Henerietta.
