– fire service, public spirited citizens save neighboring building
A 61-one year old mechanic lost his home and his motorcycle repair shop after a fire of unknown origin consumed all valuables on his Lot 16, Public Road Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara residence on Saturday night.
Several motorcycles were also destroyed while the neighboring building was also scorched. Firemen and public spirited citizens assisted in preventing the wooden building from also going up in flames.

Joseph Gomes said he has been living on the premises for the past 30 years. Gomes, who lives alone, said he locked up his home and shop at 18:30hrs on Saturday and headed for a hangout spot where he had some drinks with friends.
“I picked up some friends and we went to a club and we had a drink. At minutes to ten, somebody came in the club and told me come quick the house is on fire. I rushed down and when I see the fire it was all over.”
Underscoring that the fire could not have been electrical in origin, Gomes said he is not a GPL consumer since his meter was seized. The mechanic said he would normally use batteries as his power source.
“When I left around six I had no lights on.”
The father of two said he lost millions of dollars in valuables and hopes to receive assistance to restart his mechanic business on the same premises.
Dawn Hazel, whose home was scorched, said she heard a ‘crackling sound’ and instantly jumped up and saw the growing blaze.
“As soon as I get up I called upon my mother, because she was in the front room. The most I could have done was get my mother downstairs to safety and the boys in the areas started clearing the building and I got a lot of water soaked items upstairs after the fire.”
The five bedroom wooden building was water soaked and several electronic items and other valuables were damaged.
