As the country’s 45th Republic Anniversary draws closer, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport has formally announced the beginning of celebrations with the Children’s Mashramani Competition today (January 19).
“One People, One Culture, One Celebration” is this year’s theme for Mashramani, and the Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education’s Allied Arts Unit, announced that the children’s Dramatic Poetry and Calypso competition will be the first to jump-start activities.
At a press conference, Desiree Wyles-Ogle, Administrator of the Allied Arts Unit, explained that the competition will commence in the Region Two, Anna Regina Community Centre Ground, and culminating on February 13 at the National Cultural Centre.
The Dramatic Poetry and Calypso competition will be part of other activities organised specifically for children, including the Dance and Masquerade competition, the Costume and Physical Display and the much anticipated Costume Parade.
According to Wyles-Ogle, the competitions will be divided into nursery, primary and secondary categories, so as to accommodate for a range of school children. The finals for all the children’s competition events will be held from February 12-14.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony said that other facets of the Mashramani celebration, like the junior calypso competition, are scheduled to start as early as January 30.
Among these events will be the Chutney Competition, the Carib Soca Monarch Competition, the Masquerade Competition and Miss Mash Queen Pageant.
Of note was the Steelband Competition, which is organized by the Administrator of the National School of Music, Andrew Tyndell. Steelband as an art form was noted as needing resuscitation and is why the Minister thanked Republic Bank Guyana for its continued investment in the field.
In an effort to promote education in Guyanese history and culture, the Ministry will also be hosting a Literary Street Fair on February 20, on Main Street.
Moreover, the Minister is looking to enhance the public’s understanding of Republic Day significance, with a Republic Lecture by critically acclaimed Guyanese author Oonya Kempadoo on February 17 at the National Library.
However, the Minister noted that while the Mashramani celebration officially ends on February 23, a number of other events such as the National Art Exhibition at Castellani House and the Linden and Berbice float parades will continue on February 26 and March 1 respectively.
It was revealed that the awards ceremony for the various winners of the competition is scheduled to be held at the National Cultural Centre on March 6; a change from its previous location – the Umana Yana.
