Time really flies and it seems like only yesterday that footballers were battling tooth and nail for top honours in the Mayor’s Cup Football
Championship. In fact, one year has expired and those players will once again take to the field when the organizers stage the yearly edition of that championship at venues across the country from Friday January 30 to Sunday February 22.
This time, the winners will take home off a tidy first place prize of one million dollars while the runners up cart off $300,000. The 3rd and 4th place finishers receive $200,000 and $100,000 respectively.
The GFF Normalization Committee is now conducting the affairs of the sport and football is experiencing a delectable transition. The teams are all in kittle shape after engaging in fierce rivalry in the just concluded GFA/Banks Cup Round Robin Knockout tournament, won by Alpha ‘The Hammers’ United.
The Guyana Defence Force had played classical football all through the tournament but had succumbed to Alpha in the finals. That team will be bristling and eager to avenge that loss.
Western Tigers also played well in that tournament but stumbled against the soldiers. They had also nurtured doubts about the loss and are ready to rumble once again, this time with their eyes on the prize. As such, fans could expect fierce rivalry among units like Pele, Fruta Conquerors, Police, Slingerz and Flamingo as they anticipate the treat in store.
When the action gets underway on the inaugural night, Golden Grove will play Grove HiTech at 19:00hrs while Victoria Kings tackle Agricola. These matches will be played at the Victoria Ground ECD. Matches will also be played in Berbice and Den Amstel WCD. Among some of the leading players of the representative teams on show are Joshua Kamal, Shemroy Arthur, Devon Millington and Solomon Austin.
The organizer is former national coach, Lennox Arthur and he has intimated that the tournament would be played under the rules and regulations of the GFF. He also said that only clubs and players affiliated to their respective associations for the 2013/2014 season would be eligible for participation. Teams will not be charged entrance fees.
A copy of the rules and regulations could be uplifted from the organizer.
