Like many of the names that have been put forward for the Sportsman of the Year award that is conferred by the National sports Commission (NSC) annually, Guyana and Caribbean Individual top shot Lennox Braithwaite is in good stead to win that crown.
Braithwaite’s record during 2014 speaks for itself in terms of his classy performances on the Rifle Ranges, locally, in the Caribbean and Internationally.
He started off the year by first winning the West Indies Fullbore Shooting Council (WIFBSC) Championships Individual title in Jamaica for an unprecedented third year in a row. This performance by the top Guyanese marksman underlined his dominance among the best shooters from Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and Antigua and Barbuda.
Braithwaite was not done there as he teamed up with his fellow Guyanese to win the Short and Long Range titles at the same West Indies championships, the Guyanese taking back the Short Range title which they had surrendered to Jamaica the previous year.
Braithwaite’s performance enabled Guyana to make a clean sweep of the top trophies in the Land of Wood and Water. His performance has earned him a place in the West Indies team for this year’s World Long Range Championships and Palma Match scheduled for Camp Perry in Ohio, USA in August.
His excellent form continued at the Imperial Meet in England where the five-member Guyana team won one gold and two silver medals. Such was the excellent performance of the region’s top marksman that he made it into the esteemed Queens Final where the top 100 shooters out of over 1,000 from around the world, are selected.
Next up for Braithwaite was the Commonwealth Games in Scotland where he teamed up with National Fullbore Captain Mahendra Persaud to earn a commendable 6th place in the Queen’s Prize Pairs competition.
This was a commendable performance by the Guyanese which earned them respect from the more accomplished countries in the world, the likes of the Australians and English.
Braithwaite crowned an excellent year by winning the Guyana National Rifle Association (GNRA) Individual competition staving off stiff competition from old rivals Persaud and Ransford Goodluck.
