The man, who was behind the wheel of the vehicle which ploughed into a teenager and his friends on the Providence Public Road last month and flung them in a nearby trench, has been remanded to prison on three charges.
Almost a month after evading the clutches of the police, Asif Khan appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday to answer charges of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to render assistance to an injured person and failing to report an accident.
Khan is the suspected driver in the hit and run accident that killed 18-year-old Parmanand Deokaran in the vicinity of the Princess International Hotel, days before Christmas last year.
The victim and his two friends, Davendra Mangal, 20, of 27 Better Hope, East Coast Demerara (ECD) and Kayshane Ramnarine, 17, of 184 Good Hope, East Coast Demerara had just left the hotel’s casino and were waiting on a taxi when the accident occurred.
According to Corporal Bharat Mangru who prosecuted the case, at about 00:30 hours on the morning of the accident, Khan was heading south on the eastern carriageway of the Providence Public Road, when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with Deokaran and two others.
Mangru said that the victims were pitched into a nearby trench and were later picked up and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). Deokaran was pronounced dead on arrival.
The Prosecutor told the court that after the accident, the driver fled the scene leaving even the passengers in his car behind.
When the driver, who was caught hiding in an Eccles, EBD house this week appeared for his arraignment, he was slapped with three charges.
The first charge read to him alleged that on December 21, 2014 at Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara while piloting motor car PPP-555, he drove in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of 18-year-old Parmanand Deokaran.
Particulars of the second charge detailed that on the same day, after being involved in an accident, he failed to render assistance by failing to take the injured persons, Deokaran and his two friends, to a medical practitioner.
Khan was also charged for failing to report the said accident within 24 hours of its occurrence.
The driver denied the charges and asked the Chief Magistrate for reasonable bail. He said that he had no prior charges or convictions.
His application met with objections from the Prosecutor who cited the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence. Mangru also opined that Khan was a flight risk since he fled the scene and had been avoiding the police since the accident.
Khan’s application was rejected and he was remanded to jail. The case will be called again on January 23 for statements.
