University of Guyana Sports Co-ordinator Lavern Fraser is amongst the forerunners for the Annual National Sports Commission (NSC) Sports
Personality Award. Fraser, who has been involved in sport both at the participatory and administrative levels, has been influential in reviving Sports at the University of Guyana since her tenure started four years ago.
Having arrived at the Institution, Fraser told this newspaper the only sport that was being played at the time was cricket and with the support of the University’s Administration, Sport is now seen in a different light and is doing well.
The former national Netball and Basketball player, who confessed to having Sport in her bloodstream, also held administrative and managerial positions on national teams. She holds a Degree and Diploma with distinctions in Public Management to go with numerous certificates in Sports Administration and Coaching and was also the recipient of two national awards after being named Coach of the Year and Sports Personality of the Year on previous occasions.
Her administrative prowess has definitely revitalized interest in sports at the University in a very short time and has been credited for even introducing many students and staff to recreational activities on Campus during the period.
Just to name a few, cricket, football, track and field and rugby have all done well with the latter extending the success gained locally on to the regional level. The University on the recommendation of Fraser managed to retain a few coaches of repute to help hone the skills of players and athletes in the different disciplines and their expertise have made the institution a force to reckon with right now.
A very sociable person, Fraser’s success could also be tied to her vast knowledge of imparting life skills to those in need and this feature of her character could be the reason for the co-operation she receives from the athletes.
