Approximately six years after losing in his bid for the National Middleweight title to former European Champion, Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’
Eastman, former World Boxing Association (WBA) Welterweight champion, Andrew ‘Sixheads’ Lewis, is set to make a grand return to the ‘square jungle’ when he squares of with Jamaican 2014 ‘Contender’ Champion, Sakima Mullings, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) on Saturday February 21.
This fight will headline a five-bout card that will also see the return of CABOFE Middleweight champion, Lindener, Edmond Declou after sustaining a broken jaw in a fight against Dereck Richmond in October 2013.
This will be an eight-round Middleweight contest and Declou will be out to prove that he has recovered sufficiently from the mishap to avenge the loss. Another Lindener, Sharon Ward, will also grace the ring after a prolonged absence when she tackles Lorissa Rivas, an American of Trinidadian parentage, in a six-round Super/Middleweight bout.
Fans will also be entertained when former local and current CABOFE Bantamweight champion, Dexter Marques, matches gloves with Quincy Gomes in a six-round Catchweight affair while in the card’s opener, local debutant, Travis Fraser will square off with Barbadian, Charwyn Eswick over four rounds.
The Lewis/Mullings bout has been brewing for some time now but has failed to fructify for various reasons, the most fundamental being inadequate sponsorship. Consequently, promoters in Jamaica had agreed to carry the fight in that country and had started negotiations towards a date in February. They have since held discussions with the GBBC and decided to shift the bout to Guyana.
The GBBC President, Peter Abdool further disclosed that the Jamaicans have also agreed to share the expenses associated with the card and will be
picking up the tab for their airfares, accommodation and meals.
Notwithstanding, Mr. Abdool said that local organizers will still be shackled with an expenditure that exceeds $5.8M. He said that the impending bout is the first of three big ticket fights planned for the year. Consequently, the input of corporate Guyana will be sought towards their success.
Mullings has defeated several Guyanese including Winston Pompey, Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman, Revlon Lake and Derick Richmond in earlier fights and is confident that he can conquer any other Guyanese that stands before him.
However, he will be required to dig deep if he is to get past former World Boxing Association (WBA) Welterweight champion, Andrew ‘Sixheads’ Lewis, a wily contender that is still capable of holding his own against the best in the Caribbean.
Lewis is currently working out at the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) under the tutelage of Sebert Blake and Joseph Murray. He had been somewhat disappointed by the constant postponements but to his credit, had remained in the gym. Now that a definitive date has been announced he is expected to intensify his training schedule.
