For this year, police in ‘A’ Division will be working assiduously to foster a closer relationship with members of the public and with faith-based organizations in the District.
According to the Divisional Commander and Assistant Commissioner Clifton Hicken, during a recent interview with this newspaper at his office, by building a stronger relationship with the public and faith-based organizations, it helps the police a lot in terms of gathering key information.
“By doing so, it enhances our intelligence capability and since we have made our numbers available, our phones have been ringing off the hook. People are speaking to us and giving us information,” the senior official said.
He explained that his division was able to solve a number of cases via intelligence. “We have solved a lot of crimes and people were placed before the court.”
This newspaper was told that once the police obtain information from members of the public, it is then processed into intelligence by police detectives after which ranks will act on the intel.
A police detective told this newspaper that it was information they received from members of the public that led to the arrest Howard Rambharose months after the police had issued a wanted bulletin for him.
Rambharose is allegedly the accomplice of Kevin Fields, the bandit who was shot dead on July 14, last during a botched robbery at Ramchand’s Auto Spares Store in Campbellville.
Fields’ accomplice managed to escape but was captured and is now in prison.
“When Ryan Couchman (the man, who allegedly tried to rob an off-duty cop on January 4, last at Soesdyke) was shot and taken to the hospital, we received a call from a member of the public who informed us that a wanted man was there at the hospital,” the police source said.
He continued, “The person said that it was Howard Rambharose and right away we went there and Rambharose was arrested and later placed before the court.”
Also, four men from Sophia were remanded to prison on October 24, last after they allegedly shot and killed a 23-year-old Electrical Engineer, Abdool Saleem, in front of his Prashad Nagar house four days before.
It was information the police received from members of the public that led to the arrest of the men who later confessed to the crime.
The Commander said that his team plans to review last year and build on the weaknesses and develop on the strengths.
“While we had a 13 percent decrease overall in serious crime, we had an increase in armed robberies, rape and fatal accidents… Those are critical areas for us and we are going to work assiduously to reduce that,” the senior official said.
He is urging members of the public to continue to call and share information with the force.
