The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) has collaborated with its French Guiana counterparts to aid the development of boxing in the Guianas. GBA president Steve Ninvalle and a team from French Guiana, which included the country’s Technical Director along with two fighters, met and had discussions on key areas of collaboration.
The team arrived in Guyana Tuesday for a one week stay and also had discussions with GBA Technical and Tournament Director Terrence Poole at the Andrew `Six Head’ Lewis Gym. Ninvalle informed that French Guiana wants its fighters to train here, and broker all round cooperation with Guyana to see to sport skyrocket.
Last month, GBA had talks with president of the Suriname Boxing Association Remie Burke who had also visited Guyana. Burke expressed the desire for the introduction of the Inter Guiana competition. “I think that we are now much closer to realizing that dream. It is now to hold a meeting of the three presidents so that concrete arrangements can be laid out,” Ninvalle disclosed.
In the initial stage, French Guiana has requested that two fighters have a short training stint here. “They brought two boxers here and have asked that they train with our fighters for the duration of the stay in Guyana,” Ninvalle added. “We are happy to oblige and asked our Technical Director to render assistance.”
The foreign fighters are preparing for the French national championships to be held in France this month end.
Tuesday’s discussions also included the creation of an Inter Guiana Boxing competition during this year. According to the GBA boss, there is now a distinct possibility of French Guiana participating in the DDL Under-16 competition later this year.
The French officials have extended a verbally invitation to Guyana to participate in its next competition, to be held in Cayenne in March. The French team returns home Tuesday.
