APNU Region Ten Member of Parliament, Renis Morian, has once again reiterated the call for a safety audit to be done at the Bosai Bauxite operations, following yet another incident involving the Company’s security.
According to Morian these incidents tell the story of a Company that is”more interested in making profits, than the welfare of its work force.” Morian stressed that workers have been repeatedly calling on the management of Bosai, to improve security, but their cries have fallen on deaf ears. He also blamed the union, for not looking into workers’ rights.
“Since when the guy Edgar died in the mines I had asked for a safety audit of the Company, I did say that in the newspaper, because I’m in disaster preparedness and when I look at Bosai’s safety arrangements and protocols it is not up to par. Bosai’s security arrangement is in chaos, even though the company claims to have put ”systems in place”.
I wonder how long must the people of Region Ten put up with these things, while the Government and the Ministry of Labour sit back, and these things continue to happen to residents,” Morian stressed.
Three incidents in two months
Edgar Trotman, 45, who worked as an excavator operator, with Bosai was found dead on December 3, last with his hands bound behind his back. He was the father of six.
The man’s body was discovered by his colleagues who had turned out for the morning shift, a short distance away from the excavator he had been operating
Trotman had been working the night shift, and it was to be his last night before his shift changed.
His body bore several marks of violence, according to informed sources. Trotman’s relatives were in a state of shock over the murder, and maintained that they knew of no grievance he may have had with anyone.
He had been employed with the Company for about seven years, a relative said. He was the fourth of eight children. Robbery was suspected as the motive behind Trotman’s killing.
Informed sources said that robbery was clearly the motive behind the murder, as an Electronic Control Module (ECM) was missing from the caterpillar backhoe which Trotman had been operating, prior to his death.
It was noted that the ECM, also known as the ‘computer back,’ is a “very expensive piece of equipment, which is currently in high demand.”
The source also claimed that last November an ECM was also stolen from another machine, which was out of operation.
Bertrand Pollard, 20, of Block 22 Wismar, Linden was an apprentice attached to the Company, when he met his demise tragically, on December 24, last.
According to unconfirmed reports Pollard had been servicing a piece of heavy duty machinery in the Montgomery mines shortly before the tragedy occurred.
According to a relative of the dead man, they were told that the driver of the truck had moved off without giving any signal or notice that he was going to move.
It was a terrible blow to his family who was preparing for Christmas, and had to shelve those plans and prepare for a funeral.
Morian, reflecting on that incident had noted in an earlier interview, “the youngster that died today should not have been working on his own as an apprentice, and had there been proper mobile communication-such a thing could not have happened.”
The latest incident occurred on Saturday January 10, 2015, where an unidentified person gained access to a secured area of the Technical Services Laboratory and carted off Crucibles valued over $2 million.
The incident occurred in the presence of employees who were on duty in the lab at the time, according to a Bosai press release. Employees of the Technical Services Laboratory, at the bauxite Plant, subsequently walked off the job on the night of January 12, 2015.
The workers were protesting the detention of colleagues by police, who are currently investigating the incident which occurred at the Company, last Saturday. The workers also complained of feeling unsafe at work during the night shift, the release added.
