The diligent and persuasive work of the Police in Berbice led to them re- impounding a car from a car rental service at Chesney, Corentyne on Monday.
The car PPP 1505 was stopped on December 23, last, with four suspects inside. They included a former policeman, two ex soldiers and a man who has been fingered in a number of robberies during the past week.
After a thorough search of the vehicle a .32 revolver and five live rounds were found concealed in the roof of the vehicle.
Around 23:00 hrs on the day in question, the police were on patrol along the Whim Public Road, Corentyne, when they spotted motor car PPP 1505 which at the time was being driven by Antonio Morgan and had been rented from a car rental service on the Corentyne. The four men were inside the slow-moving vehicle along the Whim Public Road.
The vehicle was stopped and the men were asked to disembark. Checks of the vehicle revealed a chopper hidden among some clothing. The clothing included numerous long sleeve shirts, socks and kerchiefs.
The three ex-military men are all from Georgetown. During interrogation the men all gave conflicting reports. The men stated that they hired the taxi in Georgetown. Morgan had stated that he did not know the men and had picked them up as passengers from Georgetown.
The car rental service confirmed that the car was rented since December 2, by Morgan and his rental was in default for over two weeks when the car was intercepted.
The men were released and the car returned to its owner after nothing incriminating was found. However the cops working on intelligence reports retook possession of the car and found the gun and ammunition.
Investigations are continuing.
