The French Consulate in Guyana has announced that a Book of Condolences will be opened for the victims of the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris.
The Book of Condolences will be opened to members of the public at the 276 B Peter Rose Street, Queenstown, Georgetown office of the Consul General of France from 9:00 am to 12:00 am commencing today. The activity will conclude on Wednesday January 14, 2015.
Deputy Honorary French Consul, David Bertilli, said that the Book of Condolences will give Guyanese an opportunity to express their sympathies to family and friends of the persons slaughtered in the French tragedy, last week.
Bertilli said that the Book will include brief notes and pictures of those killed in the attack. Seventeen people, including journalists and police, were killed in three days of violence that began on Wednesday with a shooting attack on the political weekly Charlie Hebdo, known for its satirical attacks on Islam and other religions.
Those killed by members of an Islamist extremist group in the brutal mid morning attack on the magazine include French journalists, Stéphane Charbonnie, Georges Wolinski, Bernard Maris, Jean Cabut and Philippe Honoré.
The act has been dubbed by leaders around the world as a brutal assault on freedom of the press. On Sunday, more than 40 World Leaders joined in solidarity with French citizens to pay tribute to the victims.
