YWCC launches Mash Cup 2015
On Friday last, the Young Warriors Cricket Club of Cumberland Village, East Canje, Berbice launched the Third Edition of their annual fundraiser, Mash Cup 2015. The tournament will involve eleven second division teams from No19 to Gangaram Village, and will be of five overs aside and contested on Monday 23rd of February, 2015, a national holiday. Proceeds from this event will go towards replacing the stolen covers, donations to religious organizations in the area and help with the day to day running of the club along with further improvement work on the venue.

Regional Vice Chairman, Mr Bhupaul Jagroop graced the occasion and said that he is delighted with the work of the cricket club and encouraged others to take a page out of their book. He said the Government will continue to assist the club and added that the region is always impressed with the way their monies are spent on this venue. He said that YWCC gives more than the monies worth. He added that through the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, funds are allocated to improve playgrounds in the Regions around Guyana and the Government will continue to do so. He urged that persons be responsible and care the facilities for it benefits all and sundry.
Speaking on behalf of YWCC, First Division Captain and Coordinator of the event Ishwar Singh thanked the clubs in the area for their interest and said that this fundraiser is highly anticipated by the clubs in the catchment area. He said the first two editions were very successful and this year will be no different. He commended the clubs for the level of discipline shown and encouraged them to do the same this year. He said that incentives totaling over $150,000 is up for grabs. The matches will be of five overs aside and will be on a knockout basis with non-stop action.
Lots of gate prizes will be available for the patrons. Games will be there for the kids as well. Singh added that proceeds from this event will go towards acquiring the stolen covers, donations to the three main religious organizations, further improvement of the venue and day to day running of the club. He thanked the sponsors over the years and look forward for their support for this event.
President of the Berbice Cricket Board and executive of the YWCC, Anil Beharry called on leaders and elders of the communities to help and encourage young people to get involved in the game and keep them away from drugs and crime. He said that small pockets of development will lead to national development and he even emphasized that everyone has to place their role in the betterment of the communities. He thanked the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dr Frank Anthony for spending millions of dollars to improve playgrounds around the country and called on the cricket clubs to care the facilities. He also thanked the Regional hierarchy for their support as is evident by the presence of Vice Chairman.
The draw was also done with the host YWCC taking on Gangaram and Buski Eleven playing Kendall’s Union simultaneously from 9 hrs. Seawell will play Canefield, Rose Hall CC vs Betsy Ground and No 7 vs Goed Bananen Land. Defending champions fittingly drew the bye. Musical entertainment and well stocked food and drinks bar will be available.
