Sponsors being encouraged to come on board
By Sean Devers
After missing last year for the first time in 20 years, the Mayor’s Cup Football tournament, which began in 1981, is back in full force this year with what is anticipated to be an even more competitive tournament as it marks the 80th birth anniversary of the Mayor of Georgetown Hamilton Green.
The 2015 tournament involves 24 teams including defending champs Alpha United who beat West Demerara side Slingerz FC in the last final in 2013 and will be contested from January 31-February 22 at four venues across the country.
According to tournament coordinator, former National Footballer and Ex National Coach, Lennox ‘Mulling Scar’ Arthur, who represented this country at the senior level from 1967-1973 as a Striker, the biggest challenge at present is acquiring sponsorship for the competition which has a winner’s prize of $1 Million, a runner-up prize of $300,000, a third prize of $200,000 and a fourth prize of $100,000.
The tournament has attracted some of the leading footballers in Guyana and has been approved by the Normalization Committee of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) to be played between January 17 and February 22. The competition is scheduled to kick-off on January 30 at the Victoria Ground on the East Coast of Demerara where Golden Grove battle Grove Hi-Tec from 19:00hrs before home team Victoria Kings face-off with Agricola in the night cap from 21:00hrs.
Apart from the Victoria Ground, matches are set for the Number 5 Ground in West Berbice, Den Amstel and the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground in the City with the Grand finale being held at GFC on the day before Guyana celebrates its 45th Republic anniversary with Mashramani on February 23, when the third place play off the Final will be contested.
The 63-year-old Arthur is appealing to corporate Guyana to render the usual support in order to retain the rich vein of patronage synonymous with the Champions, adding that once sponsorship support is good the Prize money will be increased.
Arthur, who also represented Guyana at under-17, U-19 & U-23 levels, informed that Conquers with four titles, are the most successful team while Camptown with three titles are second in line. Pele, Western Tigers, Victoria Kings, GDF, Police, Thomas United, Slingerz and Alpha are the other teams that have won Mayor Cup titles.
“When we started this tournament Hamilton Green was the Prime Minister and foreign teams were included up until the late 1980s when a lack of funding resulted in the absence of overseas teams. We are urging everyone to step up and support football tournaments by way of sponsorship,” Arthur said.
“Additionally, it has an important component, that is to identify and train young men with ability in football to help them reach their full potential,” Arthur noted.
This tournament will include four teams from Berbice, four from East Coast, four from West Demarara, two from East Bank and 10 from Georgetown, featuring players like Kevin Layne Jr from Berbice, Dellon Lanferman from West Demerara, Domin Garnett from East Bank and Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson.
