Prison officer, Sherwin Stewart appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to face a manslaughter charge
yesterday. Stewart, a resident of Timehri, East Bank Demerara, is accused of killing former police rank, Neil Anthony Narine, on November 11, last, at Soesdyke/Linden Highway Junction.
The Prison officer made his appearance before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry. He was not required to plead to the charge since it was laid indictably.
Stewart was last year charged with murder in the incident, but Police Prosecutor, Corporal Bharat Mangru reported that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had withdrawn the initial charge and would be prosecuting him for manslaughter instead.
Mangru objected to bail citing the nature and gravity of the offence. He opined that the prison officer was a flight risk.
Though no facts were presented by the Prosecutor, it was previously reported that Narine and Stewart were involved in a heated argument, which escalated into a scuffle on the day in question.
Persons separated the men, but as Narine walked away, Stewart reportedly attempted to arrest Narine.
Narine, a former Police rank, resisted, but Stuart retaliated by repeatedly hitting him to the head and neck. Narine, according to reports, suffered damage to the brain and a ruptured blood vessel in the neck.
As a result of the injuries, he was hooked up to a life support machine, but after a few days, doctors confirmed that he was brain dead. He was removed from the life support machine on November 11, last.
At the end of the hearing yesterday, Stewart was remanded to prison and is set to return to court on January 16.
